Mapping Explained
Annually, MNA produces two membership documents that help us visualize our membership in a number of ways:
1. A traditional map - a geographical representation of the our membership distribution across this great, and vast state. 2. A "mapping" document that provides
details about our membership based on a variety of criteria including
when members joined, where they are located in the state, what their
annual operating budget is, and more. This Member Mapping document
allows MNA to track success as a membership organization across time and
geographic space. The information source for most data comes from the
MNA application and/or renewal form sent out to each member. MNA does
not require that members report annual operating budget, payroll, or
number of staff on the application or renewal form, therefore the
mapping document uses only MNA membership levels as categories.

2010 Highlights
In 2010, the Montana Nonprofit Association had 8% growth in membership over the previous year. MNA members were dispersed across the state and ranged in size from all volunteer organizations to those with several hundred paid staff. In 2010, MNA could count 8.5% of all registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Montana as members. Some further information from the 2010 Mapping:
- 90% of members from 2009 were retained for 2010
- 102 new members were recruited in 2010
- 70% of MNA members have budgets under $500,000
- 81% of MNA members have budgets under $1 million
- 33% of MNA members are headquartered outside the seven population centers
- 76% of MNA members are headquartered outside Montana's two largest cities - Billings and Missoula
- 56% of non-renewals in 2010 came from rural/frontier Montana
- 74% of non-renewals in 2010 had reported annual operating budgets of less than $125,000
