The Nonprofit Economic Resource Center is your home for news, analysis, and resources regarding the current economic conditions of the nonprofit sector. While there are many aspects of the economy that are beyond our control, we do know that Montana's nonprofit community is home to the knowledge, experience, and services that will bring us through difficult times. Our hope is to use this site as a means to help facilitate sharing of information among the nonprofit community. If there are resources, articles, or other ideas that you know of that are worth adding, please let us know.
2012 State of the Sector Survey - conducted by the Nonprofit Finance Fund Survey Results
In this year’s survey, more than 4,500 respondents at nonprofits across the country, including 81 from Montana, shared the details of how they are adapting their organizations and finances to economic conditions. The survey, which was conducted by the Nonprofit Finance Fund, reveals that while 2011 was a year of significant organizational and programmatic changes, many nonprofits are still facing fundamental challenges that threaten the stability of the sector and the well-being of the people they serve.
A few highlights:
- 85% of nonprofits (77% MT) experienced an increase in the demand for services in 2011.
- 88% (79% MT) expect an increase in demand for services in 2012.
- 57% (52% MT) have 3 months or less cash-on-hand.
- 87% (84% MT) said their financial outlook won’t get any better in 2012.

Federal Stimulus Resources and Updates
President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (The Act), historic legislation with spending and tax cuts totaling $787 billion, into law on February 17th. Montana nonprofits are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the contents of the bill, given the impact on nonprofits and those we serve.|
Nonprofit Economic Climate Impact Survey
MNA conducted a survey of the Montana nonprofit community in 2010 to gauge the impact of the economic downturn on the state's nonprofit sector.
