2022 Advocacy Cohort

Do you want to sharpen your advocacy plan ahead of the 2023 legislative session? Or are you building your first ever public policy plan from the ground up? Join MNA’s Advocacy Cohort for a deep dive into advocacy best practices, need-to-know policy and lobbying practices and strategies, and how to craft an advocacy plan to meet your mission current public policy needs This intensive cohort will meet six times to introduce, develop, and begin to act on advocacy plans specific to your organizational needs. The course will prioritize state-level advocacy with attention paid to federal level advocacy as needed.
By the end of the program, participants will have built an advocacy plan and taken their first steps toward advocating for their mission.
Sessions will take place virtually, so you and your team can join from wherever you are. Content sessions will be recorded and available to registrants but workshopping sessions will not.
Every Other Wednesday, 11:00 am MST – 12:30 pm MST. April 13 – June 15. Program fee includes all sessions.

Though content and resources will be recorded and posted, this is designed to be an interactive class and we encourage you to send at least one attendee to each meeting.
April | Policy + Advocacy Planning Overview; Finding Your Role in the Advocacy Ecosystem

Attendees will begin by exploring the big picture of public policy in Montana, including constraints and opportunities, advocacy and lobbying contexts and processes, the tension of maintaining nonpartisanship in a partisan environment, and other factors impacting advocacy. Participants will also increase their understanding of power and its role in agenda setting and representation and will explore how advocacy necessarily intersects with equity. Throughout, participants will engage in self-reflection, reading, discussion forums and assignments as they develop an initial understanding of their role in the advocacy ecosystem.
May | Advocacy Timeline + Prioritizing Action

Attendees will spend time exploring the planning process as a precursor to crafting their advocacy plan. As they begin to build their advocacy plan, they will learn about the role of the Board and increase understanding of the elements that create a successful holistic approach. They will prioritize their primary advocacy objectives and identify specific actionable steps and resources needed to advance advocacy goals including story, design, outreach, and collaboration.
June | Advocacy in Action + Finalizing Your Plan

Attendees will test advocacy efforts in real time with guidance and feedback from facilitator and cohort and finalize their plan for moving forward. As they begin to take action, they will have the opportunity for reflection and refinement with the cohort.

Liz Moore, MNM, has been the Executive Director for Montana Nonprofit Association (MNA) since 2011. During that time she has lobbied and advocated extensively at the state and federal levels on behalf of Montana’s nonprofit sector. In addition to working with MNA’s Public Policy Council to lead MNA’s policy efforts, she serves on the Board of the National Council of Nonprofits. In that role she serves as the chair of the National Council’s Public Policy Committee. Liz is also an adjunct professor for the University of Montana, teaching Nonprofit Policy and Advocacy in the Masters of Public Administration Program.
