As nonprofit professionals, we have the privilege of making choices about the language we use—whether in grant proposals, donor materials, or other external communications. Too often, we speak in generalizations or euphemisms to describe groups of people. Using shortcuts can dehumanize and oversimplify the very groups we aim to serve. However, we can work to remedy this issue by exploring the concept and practice of equitable language.
