Town Hall: Nonprofit Voter Engagement

August 14 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

Free

2024 is a big election year with hundreds of races across Montana and in local communities. Charitable nonprofits play an important role in engaging their communities and fostering voter participation. Join Dean McGovern, Executive Director at MontPIRG, to learn guidance and examples of how nonprofits can participate in nonpartisan voter engagement that won’t jeopardize your tax-exempt status. This townhall will cover why nonprofits are important and effective partners in voter engagement, how to ensure you remain nonpartisan, and ideas for what voter engagement can look like at your organization, from small steps to larger scale efforts. Bring your questions and ideas!

Presented by:

The Montana Public Interest Research Group (MontPIRG) is a student-directed, non-partisan organization dedicated to affecting positive change by educating and empowering the next generation of civic leaders. Through experiential education we activate citizens to promote a clean and healthful environment, open and accountable government, and strong consumer protections.

Dean McGovern looks for spaces where education and community collide into social impact and transformative learning.  He finds purpose and meaning learning from and contributing to people and groups who want more beauty, wellness, peace, inclusion, equity, and fun in their world. Dean serves as executive director of MontPIRG.  He is an associate instructor in the Honors College at the University of Utah. Recently served as executive director of the Lowell Bennion Center for Community Engagement.  Before that,  he was executive director of the Montana Campus Compact.  His teaching and scholarship focus on civic leadership and community engagement. He earned doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of Montana and baccalaureate degree from Colorado State University. Dean and his wife Amy raised five children who have launched and thrive in four different states. Solace and answers to Dean’s persistent questions are often found by running and hiking in the mountains.
