The 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act designated approximately $43 million over five years for Montana to develop a network of fast-charging locations for electric vehicles (EV’s). As more Montanans and out-of-state visitors use electric vehicles, it will be important to have a network of chargers so EV drivers can conveniently travel across our beautiful state.

To ensure strategic investment of these public funds and to maximize partnerships with entities who have an interest in installing EV charging stations, Montana must first develop an EV Deployment Plan that reflects Montana’s vision for where and when the state hopes to fund new fast-charging locations. The plan must also address how to make charging stations accessible and equitably distributed across the state, including in underserved communities. Just like driving a gasoline or diesel vehicle, EV drivers need to be able to stop in communities large and small to charge up and get to their destination.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), in collaboration with the Department of Transportation (MDT), is asking Montanans to provide ideas and comments through a survey that will be open through June 30, 2022.

Nonprofits are a part of all 56 counties, and you know your communities. Your knowledge and expertise can provide important information as DEQ and MDT works to develop the Deployment Plan and identify priorities for accessibility and equality of access for Montana EV drivers and out-of-state visitors.
