Join us for a discussion on legal issues faced by nonprofits in Montana. For the first hour, we’ll be talking with the Commissioner of Political Practices, exploring recent changes to organizational law and trends in nonprofit law. Next, a session covering what to do if an attorney is on your board, and how having one on your board could be beneficial. Finally, a panel of attorneys will address the top ten nonprofit legal questions, and how to get them answered.

Join leaders in the state to explore changes to nonprofit law, operating environment, and statewide trends in the nonprofit legal landscape.  

  

2:00 – 2:50 | Lawyers as Board Members with Joel Kaleva, Crowley Fleck  

Nonprofit board service for attorneys is a highly sought-after partnership, seen as mutually beneficial and rewarding for both the organization and the attorney. Yet, attorneys have additional responsibilities and quandaries as board members that can complicate the relationship. This session covers the ethics, responsibilities, and legal liability for attorneys serving as board members of nonprofit organizations. Current attorneys, board leaders, and those interested in board service are encouraged to attend. Approved for ethics CLE. 

  

3:00 – 3:50 |  Top Ten Nonprofit Legal Questions, and How to Get Them Answered with Montana State Bar Association CEO John Mudd  and  Panelists Christian Dietrich, Joel Kaleva and Larry Johnson 

This interactive session will cover hot topics in nonprofit law, highest needs for attorneys and organizations, and consider the benefits of building nonprofit legal capacity in the state of Montana.
