Thresholds: Leaving Nonprofit Life with Courage and Grace

Preparing for the transition of executive leadership of a nonprofit organization is not for the faint of heart. It requires courage, grace, and thoughtfulness on a variety of fronts, and impacts not only the exiting executive, but the board, the staff, and organizational partners as well.

Thresholds is a cohort-style workshop series – five 2-hour sessions every two weeks – that is an invaluable opportunity for retiring executives to learn about practices to navigate an effective executive leadership departure, to understand the role of the board and how to guide them well, and to share with others the joys and anxieties of leaving. We help participants answer these questions among many others:

  • When and how do I share the news that I have decided to leave my organization?
  • What are best practices in wrapping up my time with an organization?
  • How do I support my staff as I prepare myself to leave?
  • Some staff positions really need to be shifted around. Do I do it or leave it to the next executive?
  • What are the best resources to share with the board?

We use a tool to assess organizational vulnerabilities and the needed actions to be taken in the precious time before the executive departs. Our discussions cover crucial topics, including timing, effective communication strategies, the responsibilities of the search committee, the utilization of interim solutions, and the development of internal candidates, providing comprehensive answers to participants’ inquiries.
